August Is Here: Getting Your Student Ready for Back to School

There's a familiar energy that settles over August. Summer is winding down, school supplies are appearing on store shelves, and somewhere in the back of every parent's mind, the countdown has begun. At Lake City Academy, we feel it too — that excited anticipation of a new school year, new teachers, new friendships, and new challenges waiting just around the corner.

The first day of school is August 24th. Here's how to make the most of the next few weeks so your student starts the year confident, ready, and excited to learn.

Shift Back to a School-Day Rhythm

If your family has slipped into a relaxed summer schedule — later bedtimes, slower mornings, fewer structured activities — now is the time to gently start transitioning back. You don't need to go cold turkey on the first day of August, but a gradual shift over two to three weeks will make August 24th feel much less jarring.

Start with sleep. School-age children need 9–11 hours of sleep per night (and middle schoolers still need 8–10). If your child has been staying up late, move bedtime back by 15 minutes every few days until you're back on track. Better sleep means better focus, better mood, and a much easier morning.

Reintroduce morning routines. Practice the school-day sequence: wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, gather what they need, and head out the door on time. Walk through it together. For younger students especially, rehearsing the routine in advance reduces first-day anxiety considerably.

Set Goals Together Before the Year Begins

August is a great time to sit down with your student — just the two of you — and talk about the upcoming year. Not in a pressure-filled way, but in a genuinely curious one. Ask them:

  • What do you want to learn more about this year?

  • Is there something you want to get better at?

  • What's one thing you want to try that you haven't done before?

This kind of conversation does two things: it puts them in an active, ownership mindset about their own education, and it gives you insight into their hopes and anxieties before the year even starts. Write their goals down somewhere they can see them. Revisit them in December.

Prepare Their Space for Learning

One often-overlooked back-to-school step is setting up a good homework and study environment at home. Your student doesn't need a dedicated room — just a consistent spot that is:

  • Reasonably quiet and free of distractions

  • Well-lit

  • Stocked with basic supplies (paper, pencils, a dictionary, whatever they regularly need)

  • Associated in their mind with focused work

Involving your student in setting up this space gives them a sense of ownership over their learning — and makes it more likely they'll actually use it.

Reconnect with the Community

One of the things that makes LCA so special is its community. The relationships your child builds here — with teachers, classmates, and the broader school family — are some of the most meaningful of their school years.

If your student hasn't seen classmates in a while, August is a great time to reconnect. Reach out to another LCA family, grab a meal together, or plan a low-key hangout before the year starts. Walking into the first day of school with an existing friendship already warm makes the whole experience easier and more joyful.

Keep an eye on our website and Facebook pages for any back-to-school events, open houses, or orientation information as we get closer to the 24th.
